Introducing Commission an Artist
Like many things, new ideas start from problems. My problem a few years ago was that I wanted a contemporary painting of my parents’ house for their ruby wedding anniversary. Without a spare few grand in the bank I was struggling to find an artist and I got tired of trying to find one on Google and getting them to reply!
Newcastle College required replacement blinds for a large roofed area. The construction of metal and glass allied to the pitch of the pitch of the roof could have almost been designed as a sound reverberation chamber. The light needed controlling; the fabric had to be robust and durable with a very heavy bottom bar being specified on a blind of 6.0 m drop and the acoustics had to be addressed.
The false myth, that the genius architect doesn’t exist anymore, removes the responsibility of artistic creation in the practice of architecture. Instead some kind of committee assembly is promoted. If we accept, that the majority of buildings are designed by small offices, sometimes by sole proprietors, then the solo performance of an individual, as the initiator of the changes made in our environment, is critical!
