Welcome to The Art Of Design
  • ‘Sculptural works of Art’

John Beavan was inspired by woodwork from a very early age and his skills developed while his talent unfolded throughout his childhood and later when he trained at Shrewsbury College of Art and Design.

Over many years using age old techniques & antiquated hand tools, John has mastered the methods required to make sympathetic replications of historical pieces.  Using the contents of the Whitbread Regency Collection in Southill Park in Bedfordshire as inspiration, John and his most inventive private clients have been able to create reproductions of history’s most defined and detailed Regency furniture pieces.  Some of these pieces have gone on to be sold in Sotheby’s in London and Christie’s in New York, establishing John as an internationally recognised 21st century finest cabinet maker and one of Britain’s greatest modern craftsmen.

John has recently recreated the “Gillow look”, using the client’s own Gillow chair as a reference, he has made a matching sofa.  Hand carving giving each section a slight variant and using parcel water gilt and a flat oil base colour, the traditionally joined beech frame stands gracefully upholstered with swab and bolster cushions.

In John’s workshop, based in the wilds of Worcestershire, you won’t find a computer controlled CNC machine churning out components for later assembly with quick fix dowel screws.  John’s work is meticulously hand made to the highest level using a number of precision skills.  There is no glitzy London showroom filled with sales people; just dedicated craftsmen, experts in exacting skills like gold-leafing, carving, marquetry, and often combining these with metals and glass.  Each piece from John’s workshop is unique and individual, a ‘Sculptural Work of Art’ which makes his furniture more sought after and more valuable.

Clients are encouraged to be as involved as possible, to discuss their visions and styles and to visit the workshops at any time throughout the creation of their commission, proving authenticity and traceability that their piece is made in England by John Beavan

A recent testimonial from a satisfied client:

Dear John, our table is giving us a great deal of pleasure. You’ve created just what we wanted with great ingenuity and craftsmanship.

    Thank you very much.

    Best wishes

    Joanna
