  • Solid Wood Solutions Announce Speaker Line Up

Presented under the banner of Solid Wood Solutions, this conference event showcases innovations within the engineered timber industry. Informative case studies of iconic buildings will be high on the agenda, with experts in the field outlining the design and construction journey of some of the UK’s and Europe’s most ground-breaking glulam and cross-laminated timber projects.Solid Wood Solutions is a one day conference and exhibition designed to showcase the very best in engineered timber and creating a platform for the industry’s innovators to present some of the most prestigious projects in the UK and in Europe.

Following on from the success of the 2013 event, this year’s Solid Wood Solutions will be held at the NEC, Birmingham to accommodate the growing number of delegates. Taking place on Tuesday June 3, Tim Snelson, Associate Structural Engineer for Arup, and Jonathan Roynon, Associate Director at Buro Happold will be headlining the high profile speaker line-up.

Incorporating the company’s renowned strapline, Tim Snelson will present ‘Sky’s Believe in Better Building’ – a case study on Sky’s new 4000sq m training centre in West London.

Combining a glulam frame, cross laminated timber (CLT) floor slabs and timber cassette facades, an impressive build programme of just eight weeks was achieved for the structure and envelope. The informative case study focuses on the brief, why timber was the optimum solution, key design issues and how such a fast programme of 11 months from starting the design to completion to ultimately achieve a building beyond neutral embodied carbon.

Solid Wood Solutions is presented in association with event partners, The Structural Timber Association together with Gold Sponsors B & K Structures and Timber Expo.  The event will be supported by an exhibition of over 25 companies.

As part of the Furness Academy project delivery team, Nick Milestone, MD of B & K Structures will present the ‘Design and Construction Journey’ –  Furness Academy has been hailed as a ground-breaking project as one of the largest educational facilities to be developed in the UK using CLT, as the core structural component.

The selection of CLT as the principal material enabled the main contractor to reduce programme time for the frame construction, as well as accelerating follow-on packages by integrating architectural and building services opening requirements into the fabrication process. In total an astounding 1,988 white wood spruce cross laminated timber panels and 184 tonnes of steel were delivered, over the course of the 22 weeks, in 57 loads. The Academy has achieved outstanding environmental performance for the structural frame with sequestered carbon values of – 1395 tonnes of CO2e. Hear the full story at Solid Wood Solutions.
