The elegance of a classic Regency villa didn’t deter Cheltenham-based coombes:everitt architects from delivering a bold, contemporary extension that transforms this period home for modern family life.
The Cotswold practice has lots of experience delivering innovative design solutions for period properties. This family wished to reconfigure the attic for additional bedrooms and create a state-of-the-art leisure suite suitable for their young and growing family.
The team faced two core challenges – integrating a high-spec leisure facility, with swimming pool, within the constraints of a historic villa, and overcoming the very low attic ceiling height to make space for the required bedrooms.
Their solution was a striking two-storey rear extension, achieved by excavating the basement to form a dramatic subterranean level housing the swimming pool and fitness suite. Purposefully contemporary, the addition sits at 90 degrees to the original house, projecting into the garden to create the indoor–outdoor connection the property previously lacked.
The landscaping was carefully re-sculpted to draw light into the lower-ground floor pool area. In warmer months, a glazed wall slides open to reveal a sunken terrace – a secluded spot for alfresco dining beside the pool.
Inside the main house, the attic roof was raised and the space reimagined to accommodate three generous new bedrooms, including a guest suite.
Together, the extension and attic transformation have reinvented the way the family lives in the home. The project demonstrates how traditional Regency architecture can be sensitively adapted and extended to meet 21st-century lifestyles without losing its heritage charm.
