Aliva UK has designed a natural stone effect interior to give a luxury finish on a new north London mansion.
The company used 400sqm of its Metropolis polished plaster to transform a basement leisure suite in the Hampstead home. The multi-million pound property’s health-conscious owners specified a swimming pool, gym and luxury shower area for the facility.
Architects Charlton Brown Associates challenged Aliva – the UK leader in interior and exterior finishes – to find a natural, high-end look that would work throughout the suite, and stand up to water and condensation.
They chose Metrostone, a thick, cement-based polished plaster for both floors and walls. It gives the look of natural stone, yet is quick to apply and environmentally friendly. To ensure a watertight finish, the product was sealed with Metroresin.
David Andrews Construction, a Metropolis approved contractor, applied the polished plaster, ensuring an expert result that gave a high quality, seamless finish.
David Bulmer from Charlton Brown Associates said: “During the co-ordination process Metropolis provided a series of samples of various textures, each getting closer to the desired effect. A matt sealant was also incorporated into the samples to ensure a consistent appearance in wet areas. Once the final finish was agreed, its appearance was similar to textured concrete or natural stone, which suited the brief perfectly.
Following the successful completion of this scheme, we have looked at using Metropolis finishes in a number of other projects and look forward to working together in the near future.”
Tom Kitchener, Metropolis Sales Manager at Aliva UK said: “This was a challenging project because of the need for a seamless, uniform finish across areas with different uses, but we are delighted with the outcome. The architect wanted a top quality finish throughout the basement, so Metrostone was number one choice. It is a very versatile product that can be used in a wide variety of environments.”
The Metropolis range of paints and polished plasters is suitable for any interior, from new builds requiring a distinctive look, to older buildings needing a finish that is sympathetic to their history.
Metropolis is the name for luxury interiors for a growing number of famous brands, including Fred Perry, Alexander Wang and Adidas who have used it to give a natural feel to their stores.
