  • Torwood – The perfect balance of old and new in Murrayfield, Edinburgh

From reimagining traditional landmark buildings to creating contemporary new-build homes, AMA has been at the forefront of property development in Edinburgh for almost 40 years. All that experience has been brought together at their latest development, Torwood.

Torwood lies in Murrayfield, one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious and sought-after locations. There are good local schools, both state and private, excellent local sporting facilities, and at 10 minutes drive from the city centre it’s perfectly located to enjoy all the attractions the capital has to offer.

At the heart of the development is an impressive Victorian villa, originally built for James Craig, one half of the famous paint company Craig and Rose, which was responsible for the iconic red colour of the Forth Bridge.

Torwood House has been meticulously renovated to form two impressive four and five bedroom family homes. Wherever possible, original features have been restored or reinstated and both homes include magnificent period rooms, such as the expansive living room in Torwood House West, with its ornate plasterwork, and the magnificent galleried entrance hall in Torwood House East, with its richly carved wood panelling and stunning stained glass window.

But it’s not all about the traditional, both homes feature luxury kitchens and bathrooms, which bring contemporary design to the fore. This juxtaposition of modern and traditional is beautifully and effortlessly handled, creating perfect 21st century homes.

Within the extensive landscaped grounds sit two new pavilions, containing 23 two and three bedroom apartments and penthouses. Finished in sleek, honey-coloured sandstone to complement the main house, they offer the same level of quality and detail as their grander neighbour, but on a smaller scale.

AMA Homes is a family-run business and so a very personal interest is taken in all aspects of the process, from planning through to after sales service. This attention to detail has garnered many awards over the years with the most recent coming at The Herald Property Awards 2022, where it received Development of the Year for its work at Springwell, a former Victorian hospital building in central Edinburgh.

The large, bright Sitting Room in Torwood House West has bifold doors which open out onto an extensive patio area and the rear garden.

Among Torwood House East’s many period features, the wallpaper in the Guest Suite/Bedroom 5 has its own listing. This rare example of ‘Tynecastle Canvas’ from the late Victorian era, features embossed linen mounted on canvas and was designed to imitate 18th century Spanish examples.
